Iran has been using civilian aircraft to fly military personnel and weapons across Iraqi airspace into Syria to help President Bashar al-Assad crush the uprising, says Reuters, citing a western intelligence report.
Iraqi government has denied the reports, but there's no denying that Iran's support for Assad provides one of the key elements in the survival of the Syrian regime.
The alliance between Iran and Syria is one of the most resilient strategic partnerships in the Middle East. You'll often read about the supposed religious kinship between the Assad family and the Iranian Shiite regime, but in truth the relationship has more to do with cold political pragmatism.
