The Muslim Veil and the Law in Europe, the United States and Canada

Who Allows It, Who Bans It

By , About.com Guide

Finland and Sweden: The veil is allowed in schools, but in Sweden the burqah or any full-length, head-to-toe coverings, may be banned.

The Netherlands: The veil is generally tolerated, but no longer embraced. The full-length, full-face-covering burquah is not allowed in state schools. In 2003 the state issued a non-binding directive allowing schools to require students to wear a uniform provided that the rules are not discriminatory and are included in the school prospectus. The punishment for transgressions may not disproportionate. A ban on the burqah is regarded as justified by the need to identify and communicate with students. The Equal Treatment Commission ruled in 1997 that a ban on wearing the veil during general lessons for safety reasons was not discriminatory.

Turkey, Albania and Azerbaijan : The wearing of the veil or other Muslim covering is banned in state schools and universities. In early 2008, Turkey relaxe dits rule.

In other European countries, including the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Poland or Slovakia, the issue of the Islamic veil hasn’t yet led to significant debates or notable legal cases or laws.
