Readers Respond: Is Qatar's Bid for the World Cup Deserved?

Qatar is by far the smallest nation to win a bid to host soccer's World Cup, the most coveted prize in all sports. Qatar is also among the least prepared nations to win the bid, though it has the money and the will to build every stadium it promises, and the transportation network necessary to boot. Still: was FIFA's decision a correct one, given the corruption that led to the final vote (two members of the executive board had to withdraw after it was learned they were willing to sell their vote)? Nothing beats a well-run tournament. Until then, the question will persist: Is Qatar's victory deserved?

Yes

Why not? Qatar has the money, the resources, unlike some nations it has a strong Police task force that is uncorrupted. Sure there are certain things for the country to do e.g. fans and booze etc.. but twelve year I believe is enough time for them to get laws and stuff sorted. Has anyone of you ever been to Qatar? It isn't that women have completely no rights.

No

Obviously winning the bid is about money and bribing football officials. It has the third largest gas reserves in the world and the highest GDP per capita in the world.

Qatar does not deserve to host the world cup plain and simple. When the women have no rights, refuse to recognize Israel, and have to use the equivalent of slave labor to build the stadiums, the negatives outweigh the positives. But enjoy your fantasies of how pretty the stadiums will be...
