Readers Respond: Is Turkey Guilty of Genocide Against Armenians?

From , former About.com Guide

It is one of the most contentious issues at the heart of Turkish national identity, and one of the most divisive for Turkey in its relations with the West: Is Turkey guilty of committing genocide against Armenians at the beginning of the 20th century? The evidence overwhelmingly says yes. So does the European Union, which has made Turkey admitting to the fact a condition of Turkey's inclusion in the European Union. Yet in Turkey, the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians is characterized as the result of a famine and the aftershocks of World War I, not as genocide. Calling it such is illegal in Turkey. So who is right?

Integrity or excuses?

I don't think there is any excuse for Genocide! For example, because of the unpopularity of the Viet Nam war we ignored the Cambodian Killing Fields. We were right there and could have stopped it. The real question is not whose done it but whether the world will stop it.

Turkey Guilty of armenian genocide

Turks killed 1.5 million armenians in western armenia. They have massacre women, men, new born babes and even pregnant women and all this thing were not as result of WWI. It was well done and planned by Turkish government as genocide.

A little empathy, Please!

This is not genocide or something. Life and death battle! Westerners looking at the one-sided event. They are seeking a partner (another butcher). What are you talking about evidence. The Armenian side says there is no need historians. This story has become a reason for their existence. They sleep and gets up this story. Yes indeed a very sad event in the middle there. I'm sorry for myself. I want to live together again.

Genocide

I have searched and found out that turks killed both man and women, elder and young. The cut the heads of children and put in a park as a bust. The things that they did could be only done by animals. And now tell me, please, how Armenians can forget that. I have found out also that even Turkish scholars and historians were stating that Turkish government had organized genocide. So why do they now deny it?

I don't know for sure but...

...what I can do is to state is some facts. 1) Why is it illegal under turkish law to name the events as "genocide"? 2) Why every internet site that doesn't put Kemal Ataturk in a gentle way is banned in Turkey? 3) Why does article 301 of turkish law press charges to people or organizations that "insult the turkish nation"? -Weather it was or not a genocide, people should be able at least to discuss about it, as well as discuss about many other things.
